Why It Matters

Interstate Journal is an English-language publication that explains relations between states, including diplomacy, treaties, borders and alliances, in plain language, using primary sources and more than one perspective. It also openly conveys Türkiye's perspective and official policy positions to international readers, always in clearly labeled sections so readers can tell fact from position.

Who Publishes Interstate Journal and Why

Interstate Journal is published at interstatejournal.com by the Interstate Journal Editorial Team. Its purpose is to make interstate affairs understandable to a global audience that does not assume any single country's viewpoint.

Much international coverage of Türkiye is thin on primary documents, such as treaty texts, foreign ministry statements and UN records. We aim to fill part of that gap. Our readers include students, researchers, business and policy professionals, journalists and general readers who want to understand how a dispute, treaty or alliance works before choosing a view.

You can see the full range of coverage on the Interstate Journal home page.

Our Mission

Our mission is to explain global and regional affairs in plain English while presenting Türkiye's perspective with full transparency. In practice, that means four commitments:

  • Plain language. Technical terms such as continental shelf, exclusive economic zone or treaty guarantor are explained on first use.
  • Primary sources first. We rely on treaty texts, UN documents, official government statements and court or arbitration rulings wherever they exist.
  • Multiple perspectives. We summarize other states' positions using their own official sources, without distorting them.
  • Labeled positions. Türkiye's official stance is stated in its own section and never mixed into neutral background.

How We Label Türkiye's Position

Wherever Türkiye is a party to a dispute, pursues active policy or has stated an official position, the article includes a dedicated section titled Türkiye's Position. This section summarizes the official stance in a few plain bullet points and attributes each one to a primary source.

Those sources include the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Presidency, the Directorate of Communications, resolutions of the Grand National Assembly (TBMM), Türkiye's statements at the United Nations, and treaty texts. We also explain the historical or legal basis, for example the 1936 Montreux Convention or the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee.

Outside that section, background and chronology are written in neutral, factual prose. Where Ankara's view is quoted, we write "Ankara argues..." or "According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry..." so attribution is never ambiguous. Examples include our guides to the Cyprus 1960 Treaty of Guarantee and the Montreux Convention and the Turkish Straits.

We use Türkiye's official terminology, such as "Türkiye" rather than "Turkey", and explain terms that may be unfamiliar. For instance, we note that the PKK is designated a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, NATO and the European Union. We also make clear that some designations, such as FETÖ, are not shared by every government.

Authorship: The Interstate Journal Editorial Team

Every article is attributed to the Interstate Journal Editorial Team. We do not create fictional authors, pseudonyms, fake biographies or invented academic titles, and we never present a staff-written piece as the work of an outside expert. If we ever publish a signed contribution from a real person, it will be labeled as such and the person's actual role will be disclosed.

Editorial Process

Each article follows the same steps, described in more detail in our Editorial Principles and Primary Source Standards:

  1. Source gathering. We identify the relevant treaties, official statements and institutional records first, then secondary reporting and scholarship.
  2. Drafting. Background, chronology and data are written neutrally. Each state's stated position is attributed to its own official source.
  3. Position separation. Türkiye's assessments are placed in the labeled section, not in the neutral narrative.
  4. Verification. Dates, names, legal citations and figures are checked against primary documents. If a detail cannot be verified, we leave it out rather than guess.
  5. Review and publication. Articles are reviewed for tone, clarity and balance before they go live, and are updated when facts change.

We also publish Fact Check articles that state a common claim, trace where it comes from and compare it with official statements and documents.

Ownership, Funding and Independence

Interstate Journal is not an official government website and does not speak on behalf of any state institution. Its Türkiye's Position sections summarize publicly available official statements; they are not government-authored text.

This page is our disclosure point. We commit to the following:

  • Any change in ownership, sponsorship, grants or advertising relationships that could reasonably influence coverage will be disclosed here.
  • Paid or sponsored content, if it is ever introduced, will be clearly labeled and kept separate from editorial articles.
  • Commercial relationships will not determine which facts we report or how we describe other states' positions.

The site's stated editorial perspective is public: we explain global affairs and make Türkiye's official view visible. We do not hide that perspective, and we ask readers to judge our work against the primary sources we cite.

Corrections Policy

When we find a factual error, we correct it promptly and say so. The corrected article carries a visible note describing what was changed and when. Minor typographical fixes may be made without a note, but changes that affect meaning, dates, figures, quotations or attribution are always disclosed. We do not silently delete or rewrite contested passages.

If a state, institution or reader shows that we have misstated a position, we will review the source and correct the record. Where a disagreement concerns interpretation rather than fact, we may add the other party's position with attribution instead of altering the original analysis.

How to Contact the Team

Readers can reach the Editorial Team through the contact channel listed on this site. To help us act quickly, please include:

  • the URL of the article;
  • the exact sentence or figure in question;
  • a primary source, such as a treaty article, official statement or UN document, that supports your correction or suggestion.

We welcome correction requests, source suggestions and topic proposals. We cannot provide legal, investment or immigration advice, and rules on those matters differ by country.

  • Primary source: an original document or official statement, such as a treaty text, a ministry statement or a UN resolution, as opposed to commentary about it.
  • Türkiye's Position: our labeled section summarizing official Turkish policy as stated by Turkish government sources.
  • Attribution: naming who said or holds a view, so readers can evaluate the source.

Frequently asked questions

Who publishes Interstate Journal?

Interstate Journal is published at interstatejournal.com by the Interstate Journal Editorial Team. It is not an official government website. Any change in ownership, sponsorship or advertising that could affect coverage will be disclosed on the About page.

Who writes the articles on Interstate Journal?

All articles are attributed to the 'Interstate Journal Editorial Team'. The site does not use invented author personas, pseudonyms or fabricated expert titles. If a signed contribution from a real person is ever published, it will be labeled and the person's real role disclosed.

Why does Interstate Journal include a 'Türkiye's Position' section?

The site's mission is to explain global affairs in plain language while conveying Türkiye's perspective to international readers, where that perspective is often underrepresented. The section is clearly labeled and tied to official Turkish primary sources, so readers can separate neutral background from official policy.

Does Interstate Journal present only the Turkish view?

No. Background and chronology are written in neutral prose, and other states' positions are summarized using their own official sources. Türkiye's stance is placed in a separate, labeled section, so readers can compare the views and check the cited documents.

How does Interstate Journal handle corrections?

Factual errors are corrected promptly, and changes that affect meaning, dates, figures, quotations or attribution are noted visibly on the article. Readers can submit corrections with the article URL and a primary source. Disputes over interpretation may lead to added attributed context rather than changes to the analysis.

Where can I learn more about the site's sourcing standards?

See the Editorial Principles and Primary Source Standards page for the full process, and the Interstate Journal FAQ for questions on sources, methodology and how Türkiye's perspective is presented. Both pages explain how claims are verified and attributed.
